Politico’s Top 9 Anti-Chinese Political Ads

Politico’s Mackenzie Weinger’s got a list of some of the best (or is it worst?) anti-Chinese political ads in recent years. The list is timely in light of last week’s Super Bowl ad launched by Michigan Republican Pete Hoekstra against a Democratic rival accused of selling out to China, which featured an Asian woman (actress Lisa Chan) speaking broken English and warning - with a smile - that the US economy will grow weaker as China’s grows stronger. All while taking a leisurely bike ride through a Chinese rice paddy.One Politico-cited ad in particular, dubbed “Chinese Professor,” depicts a futuristic Chinese instructor waxing eloquent about the fall of the U.S. empire and how Americans came to be employed by the Chinese, i.e. their creditors. Other ads are less ambitious, such as the one deployed by California Senator Barbara Boxer against political opponent Carly Fiorina, whom she accused of the rather tired crime of “shipping jobs” to China. For a brief primer on the history of anti-Chinese campaign ads, see this piece by Kenton Ngo at Daily Kos. Takeaway line:
Asians are rarely, if ever portrayed in campaign ads as “Americans”. In most Congressional districts there aren’t enough Asians to bother including one. Instead, when jobs are being shipped overseas, Chinese faces are always shown to be the winners, and white Americans the losers.
